Niacin (B3)

Niacin is also known as vitamin B3. There are two forms of niacin – nicotinic acid and nicotinamide.

What is vitamin b3 needed for?

 

  • Contributes to normal energy release.
  • Contributes to the normal function of the nervous system.
  • Contributes to the maintenance of normal skin.

 

Good sources of vitamin b3 include:

 

  • meat
  • fish
  • eggs
  • milk

 

How much vitamin b3 do you need?

 

The amount of vitamin B3 you need is approx:

 

16.5 mg a day for men

 

13.2 mg a day for women

 

Niacin cannot be stored in the body so you need it in your diet every day.

 

You should be able to get all the vitamin B3 you need by eating a balanced and varied diet.

 

The Department of Health advice is that if you choose to take a supplement taking 17mg or less of nicotinic acid supplements a day or 500mg or less of nicotinamide supplements a day, it is unlikely to cause any harm.
